CASE STUDY - Emergency Services Lighting

Warwickshire Search and Rescue is one of over 30 Lowland Rescue teams operating across the UK. Comprising of around 80 highly trained volunteers, the team is based at Stoneleigh Park near Kenilworth and provides search and rescue coverage across the whole county of Warwickshire, as well as the boroughs of Coventry and Solihull, and the eastern areas of Birmingham.

Their primary mission is to locate and assist high-risk missing persons in lowland environments — often involving individuals living with dementia or those experiencing severe mental health difficulties. Tasked exclusively by the emergency services, all team members demonstrate exceptional proficiency in search & rescue techniques, navigation, and advanced first aid.

While the team’s core operations take place on foot, they are also equipped to conduct searches on water — through wading or boat-based methods — or from the air using their advanced drone capability. They also deploy their highly trained search dogs and handler teams to maximise coverage and efficiency and are well equipped to handle a wide range of critical responses.

In 2023, Warwickshire Search and Rescue responded to between 60 and 80 callouts, reinforcing their vital role within the region’s emergency response network. Their outstanding commitments were formally recognised when they became the first Lowland Rescue team to receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service — the highest honour given to UK volunteer organisations.

How Power2Go’s Lights Helped Warwickshire Search and Rescue

Power2Go’s Portable LED Work Lights were recently deployed on a key water safety training session for the Warwickshire Search & Rescue organisation. The team was training new recruits joining the organisation, teaching them lifesaving skills by demonstrating how to safely rescue a casualty in the water by utilizing the three-step method, Talk, Reach & Throw. This method involves encouraging the casualty to self-rescue and attempting to reach them then if all else fails, they’ll use throw lines to pull the casualty into safety. This method is vital to ensure a safe and secure rescue, ensuring the team are protected and don’t themselves become a casualty.

Power2Go’s lights provided crucial & reliable illumination throughout the training, allowing instructors and trainees to clearly see each step of the rescue process in challenging low-light conditions. Their portable and versatile design meant they could be positioned wherever needed, ensuring the session ran safely and efficiently with full visibility. This hands-on exercise helped prepare the recruits for real-world rescue situations, giving them the confidence and skills needed to respond safely and effectively when lives are at stake.

Beyond training exercises, the lights have proved invaluable across the organisation with their versatile & adaptable design enabling them to be used across a wide range of vital deployments. They proved especially valuable during a recent live deployment for the Welfare Resources team, illuminating a wide surface area to help them work in a safe manner with clear, unobstructed views. The lights dimmer mode provided soft and evenly distributed illumination which both reduced glare and improved energy efficiency, ensuring the batteries lasted even longer, a critical feature when lighting failure is simply not an option on live-saving operations.

Team Feedback

Here at WarkSAR we are very fortunate to own multiple products from Power 2 Go, which are the portable petal-like light tower PL-200 and two portable light tower TL-400. The key word for us is ‘portable’.
As a Lowland Search and Rescue team we can be deployed to any location in Warwickshire at any time, therefore we need to be ready as soon as possible to get the teams out quickly. With these products, we are able load them straight onto our vehicles as they do not take up loads of space and crucially, are portable enough to be carried by a single person alone.
Their portable lightweight design helps free up resources by allowing other team members to set up important equipment, such as our large communications arial. We do have external lighting on our specialist vehicles, however, the portable lighting towers can be placed in locations our vehicles cannot reach, such as on banks of rivers for our specialist water teams to search, or even in our welfare tents to aid our team members to get out of their wet clothing. We even used the tower lights during a recent task where we refurbished some of our vehicles as this gave us great lighting inside to ensure that our paint work was as high of a standard, helping us maintain our professional image.
